What Happens If You Die Without a Will in the UAE?

Most expats assume their assets will automatically go to their spouse or children. In the UAE, that assumption can devastate your family.

Bank Accounts Get Frozen

All UAE bank accounts are immediately frozen upon death with no registered Will. Your family cannot access funds for basic living expenses — sometimes for months or years.

Property Distributed by Sharia

Even for non-Muslim expats, UAE courts may apply Sharia inheritance rules to local assets — which may not align with your wishes or protect your spouse and children.

Court Assigns Child Guardians

Without a Will naming a guardian, the UAE court decides who raises your minor children. This decision can take the guardian you'd have chosen completely out of the picture.

Lengthy Legal Battles

Intestacy proceedings in the UAE can take 1–3 years and cost your family tens of thousands in legal fees — leaving them in financial and emotional limbo when they need stability most.

Your Will Questions — Answered

Everything you need to know about registering a Will in the UAE. Still have questions? Book a free consultation.

Do I need a Will if I'm an expat in the UAE?
Yes — especially as an expat. Without a UAE-registered Will, your estate is subject to UAE law which may include Sharia inheritance rules even for non-Muslims. This can affect your UAE property, bank accounts, and guardianship of your children in ways that differ significantly from your home country's laws.
What is the difference between DIFC and ADJD registration?
DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) registration is generally preferred by non-Muslim expats in Dubai and applies English law principles. ADJD (Abu Dhabi Judicial Department) registration covers all seven Emirates and is a common choice for both Muslim and non-Muslim residents. Our consultants will advise which is right for your situation during your free consultation.
Does my home country Will cover my UAE assets?
Not reliably. A Will from your home country is not automatically recognised by UAE courts for assets held within the UAE — including bank accounts, property, and business interests. You need a UAE-registered Will to ensure your UAE assets are distributed according to your wishes and through a streamlined process.
How long does the entire process take?
From initial consultation to registered Will, the process typically takes 10–14 business days. This includes the consultation, drafting (2–3 days), your review, Arabic translation (3–5 days), and a short video call registration with the authority. We offer an expedited service if you need it faster.
Can I update my Will after it has been registered?
Absolutely. Your Will can be updated or revoked at any time before your passing by registering a new or amended Will through the same authority. We recommend reviewing your Will after major life events — a new child, marriage, divorce, new property purchase, or business change. Ripple Fast Business Setup offers ongoing update services for all clients.
Is my data and Will information confidential?
Yes. All information you share with Ripple Fast Business Setup is treated with strict confidentiality. Your Will is only accessible to you, your named executor, and the registered authority — not to any third party. We handle your most sensitive documents with the same security we'd expect for our own families.
Does this work for Muslim expats too?
Yes. Muslim expats can register Wills through the ADJD framework, allowing them to specify beneficiaries, guardians, and distribution of assets within the permitted Sharia guidelines, or choose to apply their home country's law for certain asset types. Our consultants will guide you based on your faith and jurisdiction.
What happens if I die without a Will in the UAE?
Without a registered Will in the UAE, your estate enters a process called intestacy — assets may be frozen, Sharia law applies to distribution (even for non-Muslims in certain cases), the court assigns guardians for minor children, and your family faces lengthy and costly legal proceedings. Our strong recommendation is: don't wait. A Will is one of the most important things you can do for your loved ones today.
